This tutorial is intended for Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.) users running in 32bit kernel mode. Although Spring compiles and runs in 64 bits, it does not work in 64bit kernel mode (thanks to frequencyandsulphur for digging this one out). This tutorial has not been tested on older releases of Mac OS. This free software for Mac OS X was originally developed by SpringCM. The most popular version of the program is 1.4. The latest version of the program is supported on Mac OS X 10.7 or later. The size of the latest setup package available for download is 878 KB. Our built-in antivirus checked this Mac download and rated it as virus free.

Below the break is a table showing all major releases of macOS (previously Mac OS X) from the public beta through the latest public version, which is 11.3, as of April 26th—the 148th release in total.

The following was culled from Apple's support downloads page, and as such, some of the dates may be off just a bit. If you know for certain that something is incorrect, please let me know and I'll get it fixed. (Scroll to see all entries.)

Note: The Days column reflects the number of days between releases.

Some entries may appear out of chronological order (i.e. 10.5 is shown on Oct 26, but above Nov 14 for 10.4.11). This is to keep the version numbers in the proper order, even when an older OS received an update after a major new release came out. This has happened a few times over the years.

Some random notes, updated from the original post:

• Starting with the Public Beta and up through 11.3, there have been 148 macOS releases, both major and minor. This figure includes the one odd macOS X release: 10.2.7. This version was only for the then-new PowerMac G5 and the flat panel iMac G4, and was never generally released.
• As of April 26th (11.3's release date), it's been 7,530 days since the Public Beta was released. So on average, we've seen some sort of update every 51.6 days.
• The shortest time period between any two releases is six days, which is how quickly the 10.15.5 Supplemental Update 1 came out after the 10.15.5 release.
• The longest time period between any two minor releases is 165 days, which was how long we waited for the 10.4.9 update. (Tecnically, it's actually the 192 day interval between the Mac OS X Public Beta and version 10.0, but I'm counting from the official 10.0 release.)
• The smallest update was 10.3.1, at only 1.5MB. The largest (non-combo, non-main OS release) update was 11.3 at 5.71GB.
• The '???' entry for Size on a given release indicates I was unable to find the size. Feel free to contact me if you can help replace any of the '???' entries.

Stats from market intelligence company IDC suggest that Mac market share grew significantly last year, increasing from 5.8% in Q1 to 7.7% in Q4.

However, the company said that a dramatic explosion in Chromebook sales during the year meant that ChromeOS convincingly kicked macOS into third place in the desktop OS battle…

Demand for affordable distance learning devices during the pandemic was responsible for a 400% increase in Chromebook sales, seeing the market share rise from 5.3% in Q1 to a massive 14.4% by the end of the year – close to twice the share of macOS.

GeekWire reports:

New numbers show 2020 was the first year that Chromebooks outsold Macs, posting impressive market share gains at the expense of Windows. Computers powered by Google’s Chrome OS have outsold Apple’s computers in individual quarters before, but 2020 was the first full year that Chrome OS took second place. Microsoft’s Windows still retained majority market share, but also took a big hit as both Chrome OS and macOS gained share.

The milestone is based on numbers provided by IDC, which doesn’t typically break out sales based on device operating system. But when we went looking to see how the pandemic may have impacted the PC market, IDC analyst Mike Shirer confirmed the findings to GeekWire.

The piece suggests it should serve as a “warning” to Apple, but that’s putting it a bit strongly: Macs don’t compete against Chromebooks (with the possible exception of one or two ultra-premium models), and students using Apple kit are split across both Mac and iPad, so it’s really comparing, uh, Apples to oranges.

Chromebooks pose a greater threat to Microsoft, which saw the market share of Windows fall from 87.5% to 76.7% in the course of the year. As GeekWire notes, that’s the first time Windows has dropped below 80% in decades. Increasingly, those who would once have bought low-end Windows laptops are switching to Chromebooks or iPads.

Microsoft is well aware of the Chrome OS threat and is readying Windows 10X. A leaked build of that upcoming OS last month revealed a design, user experience, and approach that’s very similar to Google’s operating system. The OS, originally for dual-screen devices before a telling pivot, is expected to launch in the spring and target education as well as business customers.

Macs will of course benefit from further increased demand during the course of this year as new Apple Silicon-powered models are launched.
